Honeywell is an American diversified technology conglomerate that specializes in consumer and building products, engineering services, and aerospace systems. Today, Honeywell's fire and life safety lineup is divided into two sectors: Honeywell Fire & Life Safety Solutions (proprietary products and service, part of Honeywell's building solutions sector) and Honeywell Life Safety Group (comprised of many manufacturers).

[edit] History

In 1957, Honeywell entered the life safety market when they purchased a small fire detection and alarm company. Honeywell then began manufacturing their own burglar alarm and fire alarm systems.

Honeywell's building solutions sector of proprietary fire and life safety systems manufactures, installs, monitors, and maintains their own systems with a similar business approach to that of SimplexGrinnell. Prior to the 1990's, Honeywell manufactured most major components of their fire alarm systems, including fire alarm control panels and pull stations. In the 1960's, Honeywell introduced the iconic S464 series of pull stations. In 1971, Honeywell introduced the first integrated system of fire alarms with the Alpha 3000 control panel. This system was the first to integrate fire alarm and HVAC systems, allowing for advanced smoke control. In the 1980's, Honeywell introduced the DeltaNet series of fire alarm control panels, including the FS90 (conventional) and FS90 Plus (addressable). These systems utilized the DeltaNet network and could be programmed and controlled via a computer terminal. Addressable DeltaNet panels used intelligent System Sensor devices. Wheelock notification appliances were often used during this time. The DeltaNet series was replaced with the Excel Life Safety System in the 1990's, with new XLS10, XLS200, and XLS1000 fire alarm panels. The XLS200 and 1000 were rebranded EST2 and EST3 systems, and introduced the new Signature addressable device protocol, comprised of EST devices. The Excel system was replaced with Honeywell Enterprise Building Integrator (EBI) in the 2000's, and introduced the XLS1400-2 and XLS3000 systems (rebranded Notifier NFS-640 and NFS-3030 fire alarm control panels). The Signature protocol was replaced with all System Sensor devices.

[edit] Honeywell Life Safety Group

In 2000, Honeywell expanded it's life safety sector with Honeywell Life Safety Group, a collection of manufacturing companies owned and operated by Honeywell. This was primarily fueled with Honeywell's acquisition of Pittway Corporation. In some cases, product lines overlap between companies (e.g. conventional MS-2 and MS-4 control panels are manufactured by Fire-Lite, Notifier, Gamewell-FCI, and Silent Knight). Unlike Honeywell's proprietary line of fire systems, Honeywell does not install, service, or monitor devices made by Life Safety Group companies.
